Electricity

What Is Electricity?

Around us, we can see numerous objects which we say run on electricity. Some of us may wonder what electricity actually is? Its a big question and a very nice one to be curious on.  Hence the Answer is   "Electricity is the flow of charges/electrons". Many of you may know what is electricity, charges, electrons etc. But My duty is to tell all of them who doesn't know the exact meaning. Let's begin with electrons and atoms.

Atoms And Electrons

Atoms are the smallest/basic and stable particle of matter know to man. All things are made of atoms. Even we are also made up of atoms. So many people might think how atoms look like, how do they exist, What are its components etc etc . I am here to complete all your curiosity.

Atoms exist in groups. Many atoms together form molecules. And many molecules form an object. You may say that a single drop of water contains billions of atoms. Thats a very big number to count even. But atoms do not exist on their own. There are three components or subparticles of Atom.
They are:
  • Protons ( positive charge +ve, present in the nucleus)
  • Electrons( negative charge -ve, present around the nucleus)
  • Neutrons( neutral charge, present inside the nucleus)

We will discuss about everything in the Chemistry Section. Let's talk about Electrons for Electricity.
Electrons have -ve charge on them and they produce electricity. Electrons can flow anywhere. In atoms they form a fixed orbit and move on them. But some of the electrons moving in the last orbit get detached easily. And their flow in the material causes electricity to produce.

Electricity in Conductors

The electrons which get detached from the atoms are called "free electrons". In Conductors, There are lots of free electrons present inside them. These electrons flow anywhere inside the conductor. But we know that flow of electrons generate electricity. Then Why don't we get a shock if we touch any conductor?

The answer is simple. For current(electricity) to flow. we need a potential difference of electrons flowing in that conductor. We have to maintain an equal difference of electrons and also maintain a specific direction of the flow of electrons. Only then the current flows through it.

Let's imagine it practically. A conductor has a lot of free electrons inside it moving here and there at any direction. So the net chare inside the conductor is zero. Now, attach a potential source(cell or battery) to the  conductor through wires. Now actually what is happening that the electrons are experiencing a force on only one direction. That is, from negative terminal to the positive terminal. From one side of the conductor, an electron experiences a force and gets pushed outside the conductor. This stage lefts the conductor with one electron less. Now this is the reason for the current flow in that current. Now that electron flows through the wire and enters the conductor from the back-side which again gives a force to another electron, which moves again outside the conductor. This cyclic electron-imbalance in the conductor is the reason, why current flows only when their is a potential source.

So friends we will discuss more in later posts. If anybody has a doubt, they can ask at anytime and I will definitely answer them.

Thank you Everybody   :)
